God & Video Games
As I was reading the Bible in the shower the other day (yeah...I do that...everyone is always surprised...greatest time for someone who gets distracted easily, but as I was saying, I was reading the Bible) and I discovered something in Psalm 88:11. The verse reads, "Is your love declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Destruction?"
Now you might read that and have no clue what it means (it is a psalm asking God for help), but I noticed Destruction had a subnote and looked down and saw that the Hebrew word was Abaddon.
It made me feel really weird. Because I knew that name.
I knew that name because the main villian of the game Guild Wars: Nightfall is Abaddon. It was nice to be able to write it off a little in my mind knowing that it was the bad guy in both contexts, but it brought up another question in my mind.
Why is there such a fear of putting God in things like video games if they aren't a "Christian" game (which general means its not any good anyways)? There are often references to things such as demons, angels, rituals, dark gods like Abaddon, even some references to some of the ancient gods, but I have never seen a reference to God (unless used profanely).
In searching for an answer, I discovered something. Most of the games that talked about gods and spiritual beings were games that were made overseas or with a global focus. Games that are targeted and made primarily in America are generally completely absent of anything other than WYSIWYG.
So what this is now forcing me to ask is this: Is it better to live in a culture that does not allow "spiritual" beliefs to be prominent in media? What it be like to have God play a prominent role in a video game that doesn't require you to collect the armor of salvation and then fight demons (meaning doesn't have to directly hit a Biblical principle)? Is it wrong to play a game that has you waging war against false gods? Is it wrong to play games that ask you to use creatures named after false gods?

Spiritual Warfare?
Hey, I beat "Spiritual Warfare" - I think it took me at least 2 or 3 days back when I was in Jr. High. I converted people by throwing the pomegranate of the spirit at them. That's why I'm so spiritual now! ;Þ
On a more serious note, I like your question. Have you ever played the game "Black and White" by lionhead studios? In that game you play the role of a god and get to decide if you will be good or bad.
I think I'm afraid that if they did start starring God in video games that their presentation of him would be way off. So I guess is it better to not have God at all or to portray him inaccurately? I don't think it's wrong to have spiritual themes in games - I think we will be seeing that more and more.
The question I want to know is why Christians can't create a video game to be a good game? Why can't they create a good game and weave in some good themes into it instead of taking silly Christian themes and hanging some cheesy graphics on theme?

I've thought about your last question a lot, but never was able to come up with an answer that addressed some of the earlier thoughts about how God is portrayed. No matter what direction I take my thinking, it always seems to fall apart...except Dance Dance Revolution Christian Edition...lol...j/k.
lol
DDR-CE...hummmm.....i kinda like the sound of that....
Spiritual Warfare...I remember that game...that and Exodus were all I played for the longest time after I beat all the Mario games! (ok...maybe an occasional tetris game here and there....)
